A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
IN THREE WORDS
loss powerful intense
This is a must read for middle grades and above including adults. Conor is a young boy having to deal with his mother having cancer as well as a distant father who has moved to the states AND a bullying situation. He keeps having a recurring nightmare that is not revealed entirely until the end of the book. He also has a monster that has begun to visit him that he SHOULD be afraid of, but really-when your mother, who is your lifeline, is being eaten alive with cancer, why would a monster scare you?
The most powerful statement in this book to me was when Conor said to his mum, “I don’t want you to go.” That makes me tear up just writing this statement.
This is a tough read in the emotional sense. It’s heavy. It’s powerful. And you better back it up with a lighthearted book like Clementine or Clarice Bean or the Sunday comics or something! But it’s definitely one of those books that you won’t regret reading and will touch you to the core of your being.
5 of 5 stars!
My last thoughts on this book: Get the kleenex and expect to be drawn into one of the most heartfelt, intense, and touching stories you will ever read.
