Math Rocks!!

Hello everybody!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a busy year! 2 grand babies ( 3 months old and 10 months old now), my mom moved next to us, my daughter moved back home with us, and I changed school systems after 11 years in the same one.

Whew!! Great times. πŸ™‚

I am now teaching 6th grade math. YES- math! And I LOVE it!!!

1 prep- 3 classes each day. Life is good!

And I have a lot to say about math and a lot of changes I’m already wanting to make.

Don’t want to keep you too long with this post, and I promise I’ll post some pics of what we’ve been doing in math, but anyone out there dabbling in a standards based classroom or self paced learning????

My wheels are turning………….

My One Word

I chose my ONE word to focus on this year.

SERVE.

1. Serve God
2. Serve my family
3. Serve others

And God has already been working on me this 1st day of 2015. πŸ™‚ Being that today was New Year’s Day I had an entire schedule made out of things I wanted to accomplish today. But God had other plans for me today and took me in a completely different direction. And that’s ok. Because this:

Proverbs 19:21-
Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.

My prayer to Him when I chose my word, serve, was for Him to reveal opportunities for me to do just that, and to make me aware of how to serve, and to guide me along the way. And He answered. πŸ™‚

Did you choose a word to focus on this year?

Spiritual Journey Link Up

This is my 1st time linking up with Holly at Reading, Teaching, Learning for her Spiritual Journey Thursday link up.

20140717-074754-28074816.jpg

Her post today is about looking to the eternal instead of the external in reference to beauty. Mine is completely different.

I wasn’t going to take the time to post, because I’m headed to the hayfield. BUT after my morning devotion there was no way I could NOT post! πŸ™‚

My devotion this morning was about being like a child and trusting Jesus.

Mark 10:14

My devotion this morning:

Comes from this book:

So I read the devotion, read the scripture, and prayed.

Then as I was perusing Facebook, what did I come across?

THIS:

HE reaffirms EVERYTHING FOR ME ALL THE TIME!!!

I see God in everything I do now. He is with me at all times. I am full of joy because of him.

And THAT is my Spiritual Journey Thursday y’all! πŸ™‚

Have a great and joy filled Thursday!

Number Sense Everyday

I worked in my classroom some yesterday. Gah- I’ve got SO much to do!!! One thing at a time……….

I’m wanting to implement a 10 or so minute number sense routine each day to help build their understanding of number quantity and decomposing numbers. Here’s the area on my board that we will work with. I’m also going to put some little posters around the 100 chart of math strategies. For example, draw a picture, use manipulatives, etc.

Does anyone else do this or something similar to this?????

Rate Your Writing

I found this awesome set of posters to use with my kids so they can SEE what good writing looks like and learn to self assess their own writing independent of me.

You can get your own set at Sugar and Spice! Wasn’t she so nice to make these for everyone? πŸ™‚

Has anyone else used something like this in their classroom? How did you implement it with the kids? Was it effective?

Tech Thursday- Go Noodle

Have you heard of this website? A friend told me about it a few weeks ago, but I didn’t take the time to check it out. I heard about it again at a workshop I attended today, and I CAN’T WAIT TO TRY THIS WITH MY 6TH GRADERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Heads up: It requires flash player so you will have to use it on your PC.

Go Noodle is a brain break PARTY!

It’s FREE. There are A LOT of brain break choices. It’s FREE. πŸ™‚

We will be trying this out next week ASAP!

Reading Marathon

In celebration of Dr. Seuss and Read Across America week we had our own little reading marathon Friday. Most of the day was spent reading, but I threw in a couple of other activities.

This is a picture of our note pass. They each wrote a paragraph about the book they were reading. Then we passed it to the person on the right. They read and commented. Repeat. Simple but fun and engaging!

20140308-095416.jpg

We did a book pass, too. I’ve done this in the past with 2 other classes. Everyone has a book (that I pick out). πŸ™‚ I tell them to start reading on page 1 for about 2 minutes. Stop and write the title down IF it’s a book you’re interested in reading. Pass to the person on the right. Repeat. In an ideal situation, they would be exposed to as many books as there are students. However, we ran out of time. BUT-only 2 students out of 14 said they didn’t find a book they were interested in. SUCCESS!

20140308-095445.jpg

Of course, we had our normal read aloud. We are currently reading WONDER by R.J. Palacio. I have 6 boys who say it’s boring so any ideas you can throw my way to get them into it…… πŸ™‚ I think that next week I’m going to have them send Auggie a “text” before he starts school. πŸ™‚

They had to pay attention while they were reading (don’t we always want them to do that????) and lift a line our of their book. One that spoke to their heart, one that they loved the way it sounds, etc. Anything they wanted to choose. Here’s our chart:

20140308-095453.jpg

It was a great day!!!

The only drawback was that one student didn’t come to school. That student stayed out because ALL WE WERE GOING TO DO WAS READ.

Sigh.

I guess that student doesn’t think any learning is going on when that happens. JUST when I start to feel successful….

Protopage and Daily Agendas

I mentioned our Protopage that we have started using in our classroom in my previous post HERE.

It has useful links, our morning work instructions, etc. I’m now thinking (I do this A LOT) that I could put a daily agenda on it each day. Something to guide ME, and something for the kids to see and read. Might be especially helpful when kids are absent!!

Prime example:

Student: What did we do yesterday while I was out?

Teacher: Ummmmm……let me think back.

Other Student: I don’t know.

See what I mean? Might really come in handy! LOL!

Here’s a screenshot of tomorrow’s agenda I made using a sticky note on our protopage:

20140108-225228.jpg

My students can also duplicate this sticky note and put under their individual tab if they want to. That way they could erase each thing as we do them. They will definitely take advantage of this feature on Fridays since our Fridays are COMPLETELY individually paced!!! You can read about how we run our Fridays/assessments HEREΒ or HERE.

I can honestly say that I am LOVING being a 1:1 classroom-EVEN with ALL the difficulties we have had!! In fact, I just talked with our super today about POSSIBLY unblocking youtube or doing SOMETHING to make it easier for teachers to access. THAT has been my biggest obstacle this year-blocked sites. Makes innovate lesson planning pretty much IMPOSSIBLE. πŸ™‚

Hoping for the best tomorrow with creating those tables in google docs for our climate research. It’s quite the learning curve for the students to do these types of things. πŸ™‚
