Reading Tools

I am creating this page to have a place to put miscellaneous things like reading genre posters, reading surveys, reading logs, etc. It will probably just be a free for all. Some of the things will be what I have created while others will be treasures that I have found on the web. 🙂 Let me know if you want me to search for more stuff or create anything!

Reading Interest Survey: I created this survey to give to my 6th graders at the beginning of school so that I can get to know them and match them with great books. I used The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller and The Reading Zone by Nancie Atwell to create my own survey.

Reading Genre Posters-You can put these posters all in 1 place in your classroom and/or hang a specific one up on a focus wall for each weekly story.

Reading Genre Tally Sheet- This is for the students’ reading notebooks so they can keep up with the genres they are reading.

Reading Log Sheet- This is a reading log on Beth Newingham’s website for the kids to record all of the books they are reading.

Books I Plan to Read- This is a sheet for kids to write down the titles of books that they think they may want to read in the future-maybe based on books they have seen or books that have been recommended to them.

Reading Requirements-I want them to read 50 books (10 being picture books) for the year. I typed up a little handout to give them to keep in their noteobooks.

Reading Response Notebooks- They will be required to write 1 letter each week to me about the book they are reading. Here are the guidelines for the letters so they will know what is expected of them.

    • It’s going well so far for most of my students. They are reading more than they did last year when other teacher used the basal. I only taught history last year. 🙂

I love hearing from you. Let's have a conversation!
